“Oh, don't be silly - EVERYONE wants this. Everyone wants to be us

I don’t know about you, but I feel this book created and pushed a lot of standards (not necessarily all good). The Devil Wears Prada is a book about Andrea Sachs and the witty way by which she navigated herself through a highly dangerous career in an explosively dynamic field.

Andrea Sachs is a quiet, no-drama English Graduate who is looking for an editorial job in the magazine industry in New York City. But the odds are not in her favor as she gets a job as a junior assistant for the Editor-in-chief, Miranda Priestly, in one of the fashion magazines – Runway. For someone who wears minimal make-up and has a low fashion sense, Andrea struggles in her new job, only initially. She learns things soon enough. Inspite of solid competition and an unappreciative boss, she learns to rise into recognition. But what after that? She also has a troublemaker for a best friend and a love triangle (almost) to spice things up.

This book is a high-end chick-lit. You would feel it in many scenes, especially when Miranda asks Andy to get the unpublished manuscript of a Harry Potter book for her children or when Emily (another assistant of Miranda’s) refuses to even take a break to pee between work in fear that Miranda might need her when she’s gone.

The concept of her job was new to me when I read the book as a teenager with wide-open eyes and mouths. There were so many things that were amazing. Yet, I found it a bit draggy and dry in many places. This wasn’t my first chick-lit. Chick-lits were one of my favourites back then. But I found this book slow-moving inspite of Andrea almost cheating on her steady boyfriend (That is supposed to give us anxiety at least, right?!)

Although it is classified as a Chick-lit, I found it hard to accept it that way. Now that I have accepted it, I must also admit that The Devil Wears Prada was also one of the dry books I read in my teenage. (You see how old that book is? I read it when the book was new.) And if you are still wondering, yes, my initial description of the book was supposed to be sarcastic. Although Andrea is supposed to have a witty narrative, it tingled nothing in me. Inspite of two love interests, not one would make you blush or giggle.  Even when there are five solid supporting characters, no one seems to have much of a character depth. Even Miranda Priestly did not seem as amazing a character in the book as she does in the movie. But I most definitely found the story quite interesting. Learned a lot of things that were true and happening at that point of time in the magazine industry. I hope things are different now though.

In conclusion, The Devil Wears Prada is a good book with an interesting subject and a whimsical narrative. But I would prefer the movie over the book anytime.

  3. I haven't read the book. But I have watched the movie three times. It's highly entertaining. I am not a fashion fan, as the industry is really not environment conscious. Nevertheless, I do find some parts sensible, as about spreading the right clothing, making people look good. I would like to read the book too.
