I know I have given a rating of 3 stars. But it’s more 2.5ish.

“Accept the things to which fate binds you and love the people with whom fate brings you together, but do so with all your heart.”
- Marcus Aurelius

This is a quote I came across on Pinterest while I was searching for a quote on Fate. And I really liked this one, and it seemed the perfect fit for the book The Fate I Cherished.

The Fate I cherished is the debut book of author Debashrita Manik. The book tells the story of Pihu – a girl from Cuttack, Odisha, who has the perfect husband and a settled life. Pihu has recently launched her debut book. She feels delighted and blessed for everything she has, except for one thing. She constantly misses her best friend who had left her. Who is this best friend? Why did she leave Pihu? Was Pihu’s life always this perfect? Pihu had a lot of plans for her life along with her best friend. But fate took a different turn. What changed in Pihu’s life?

The story is told in two time periods – the present and the past – mostly from Pihu’s point of view. What I liked about the book was the lovely, soft, warm feelings it transmitted. I smiled a lot while reading it because Pihu and her best friend were so relatable yet they were the Goal! It surely gives a lot of reminiscence to the readers with the Board Exam situations, school crush/relationship, innocent friendships, first major life decisions, the little pleasures that every teenager goes through, etc. It also contained some downfalls that everyone would face at some point of time in their life, making the book all the more something that the reader could definitely relate to. I liked the fact that all the characters were confident and positive. The book had a simple language and was a light, breezy read.

What I did not like about the book was ironically what I liked about it. Well, mostly. Yes, the book reminded me of my teenage days. But I could not stop noticing how different it was from that of the protagonist’s. I felt like the entire story was like an innocent, sweet, little bubble. Pihu’s life was just way toooo perfect and dreamy to be real. I was disappointed when the book, at last, had a serious matter to consider and it was totally ignored and given a preference lesser than what it is entitled to. Above all, the major drawback was the editing. The book required a lot of editing. This lack of editing constantly disrupted the flow, I felt. But yes, it was sweet of the author to give a disclaimer at the end of the book.

On the whole, The Fate I Cherished is a sweet book that would put a smile on your face. If you are a beginner at reading or looking for a light read, I would definitely recommend this book.

P.S. This is the debut book of the author. I wish her good luck on her upcoming books.
