Letters from a Dead Girl - Shivani Malhotra - Book Review - Bookmarks and Popcorns

Genre: Mystery, Drama
Author:
Shivani Malhotra

Before I proceed with the book review, I would like to apologise to the author, Shivani Malhotra, for the late submission. The delay was due to some personal reasons. I am terribly sorry.

Content Warning: The book contains sensitive content. If you are someone who’s going through emotional or mental trauma, read the book after you feel like you are ready to pick it up.

Acquainting with someone is no big deal. An acquaintance with trust is what makes a bond. Trust seals belief, safety and comfort. But when that trust in someone significant breaks down, will one break along?

Letters from a Dead Girl is a story about the mystery behind the death of Simran, a smart and bold college student. To puzzle things out more, after her death, Simran’s friends and family receive letters from her. Determined to solve the mystery, Simran’s brother takes every step to uncovering the truth. The answer to the question: Was it really a suicide? If yes, what pushed her so hard that she thought this was the only option left? Who’s sending these letters in her stead? And why are they doing this?

A story that is sensitive yet was relatable in so many scenes. The main plot was highly engaging and attention-grabbing. The story was taken in a very sensible way and the back and forth relying upon the present to past at the right times just plays a major role in letting us keep up with the fast-moving story-telling. Attention to detail is not missed anywhere.

The book has a superior capacity to make one cry. I cried too. The descriptions of emotions or simply the relatability of what the character goes through, left me with a bit of a heavy heart. So, I repeat, if you are someone who’s going through emotional or mental trauma or healing from one, give yourself some time and pick the book when you are sure you can.

What we value the most has the capacity to be taken away from us and also to take away something from us. Even life. Although the truth is orderly unraveled, one could have guessed it. Yet, a few questions left unanswered are hopefully answered in the next book. Yes, the author has finished it with a ‘To be continued’.

A book with simple language, an easy read and the potential to break your heart.
